New Tenure-track Assistant Professor of Geology position to begin fall 2014.  We require a Ph.D. in Geosciences (preferred), or a related Ph.D. discipline and a M.S. in Geosciences. Expertise desired in environmental and aqueous geochemistry. A strong commitment to teaching, published research, and research with undergraduate students is essential. We seek an excellent teacher and researcher who will engage undergraduates at all levels in environmental  and aqueous geochemistry courses/research, and also teach introductory geology courses (some with labs and/or large lectures), which are part of the general education program and the geology core. Courses typically involve lab/field experiences. The position requires a strong commitment to published research, proposal writing and submission, design and implementation of a new environmental emphasis, and service to the unit, college, university, and community. We are interested in creative teachers and researchers who complement existing faculty strengths. We also value experience outside academia. Opportunities exist to collaborate with researchers in the Annis Water Resources Institute.

The department currently consists of twelve faculty members, a lab supervisor, and about 100 majors in geology (B.S.), Earth science (B.S.), and geochemistry (B.S.).  Several faculty members in the department also educate pre-service teachers in an integrated science degree (B.S.)

Nature of Work and Duties:
The Conservation Planner will guide and manage
the revision of CNMI's State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP), which identifies
species of conservation concern, articulates the perspectives and
priorities of constituents, and guides research and management of wildlife
and marine resources. The Conservation Planner will collaborate with
internal and external partners at the state, regional and national level,
be familiar with and implement the industry's best practices, develop
conservation priorities, and revise the SWAP in collaboration with and
under the guidance of resource managers in CNMI's Division of Fish &
Wildlife.

The Conservation Planner will review all of CNMI DFW's research- and
management-related activities. The Conservation Planner will represent the
interests of CNMI's Division of Fish & Wildlife and its constituents. The
position reports directly to the Director of Fish & Wildlife on Saipan.

Specific duties of the Conservation Planner will include:

. Develop a list of criteria for identifying species of greatest
conservation need
. Review, compile, and summarize data and publications
. Solicit and summarize perspective on conservation needs, priorities, and
concerns
. Generate and discuss a formative and comprehensive report
. Make recommendations for and outline the writing of the 2015 SWAP
. Hold a quarterly meeting with resource managers
. Provide quarterly status update
. Draft and finalize the CNMI SWAP

Qualifications:
 Candidates will minimally have a Bachelor's degree in
wildlife conservation, ecology, conservation biology, natural resource
planning, or a related field; three years of professional experience in
planning or biological or natural resource fields; experience with at
least one significant planning initiative; an understanding of species,
habitats, cultures, socioeconomic conditions, and conservation challenges
that characterize the region; an understanding of complex ecological
processes (biodiversity, climate change, geology, hydrology and human-
environment interactions) that influence species and habitat distribution
and persistence; experience in team-building, group process facilitation
techniques, and meeting design; advanced writing and organization skills;
advanced communication skills sufficient to present information to lead
discussions about specific aspects of planning; ability to search, read,
and synthesize findings of scientific research and technical documents;
have working knowledge and ability to use GIS; ability to organize and
lead diverse groups of stakeholders.

Preferred Candidates will have an advanced degree a related field and have
significant work experience; advanced knowledge of both terrestrial and
marine ecology; advanced statistical expertise; natural resource
management experience; experience with geographic information systems and
databases; extensive experience in developing and producing professional
and/or technical reports.

public on wildlife-related issues.

The WPIO will have an active role in the CNMI Wildlife Section's research

Wildlife Section accomplish its Mission Statement and serve its
constituents. The position reports directly to the Wildlife Section
Supervisor on Saipan.

Assist the Fishing, Diving, and Other Uses (FDOU) Coordinator with the following tasks:

• Coordination of Reef Visual Census (RVC) partners (e.g., weekly email reminders).
• Giving presentations at public stakeholder meetings regarding the SEFCRI ‘Our Florida Reefs’ Process (OFR).
• Updating SEFCRI OFR presentation as needed, based on stakeholder feedback..

Waterbird Biologist Position at USGS

The U.S. Geological Survey, Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (PWRC) in collaboration with USGS Western Ecological Research Center (WERC) is seeking a full-time research biologist to work in a team setting to study waterbirds and wetlands for multiple research projects.  The main focus of work will include analysis and writing scientific papers for ongoing waterbird ecology and disease studies as well as handling logistics  and leading fieldwork for ongoing studies.  The position is located at PWRC in Beltsville, MD and is funded for 17 months with possibility of extension based on performance and grants.

A major component of the work will include writing up avian influenza disease studies and assisting with applying disease models for web applications.  Strong writing skills are required with a proven ability to complete peer-reviewed scientific publications quickly.  The position may include fieldwork for studies of wild birds (such as capture, marking, and sampling) and ecology studies (bird surveys, land-use change studies, and population monitoring at restored wetlands).  Fieldwork may require long hours under difficult environmental conditions.  Duties may also include administrative tasks such as assisting with setting up contracts, ordering supplies, communicating with collaborators, and other logistical tasks.

Requirements:

Proficiency to independently write scientific publications for submittal to peer-reviewed journals.  The role will include coauthoring or leading several manuscripts from existing USGS datasets or new efforts as assigned.  A PhD degree in ecology or related field or a MS degree with 4-6 years of experience is preferred, but the primary required experience will be a proven track record in scientific publication.

Professional competence in planning, designing, executing, and coordinating research.

Effective and constructive communication with appropriate Government representatives, both within the USGS and with international research partners. 

Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, applying good judgment used to determine the order of completion of work, and effective communication employed to manage and meet the expectations of PWRC and partners.

Knowledge of procedures, concepts, terminologies and practices of investigations related to  waterbird and wetland ecology.

Marine Mammal Biologist Vacancy in Philippines

Background 
C3 is a young dynamic organization demonstrating how credible and rigorous scientific research can be combined with traditional ecological knowledge to inform effective conservation management actions from grassroots to regional and international levels. C3 currently has a vacancy for a Marine Mammal Biologist for its expanding Philippines program which focuses on long-term coastal resource management initiatives.  Our work employs local environmental knowledge in combination with conventional scientific research and has a strong emphasis on community involvement and capacity-building.  Working closely with the national government, local and international research institutions and community groups, our programs develop and implement sustainable actions for marine biodiversity conservation and economic development in marginalized regions. 

Position Responsibilities
 The C3 Marine Mammal Biologist will be responsible for the project management of our dugong population survey project in Busuanga, Palawan.  Specific tasks include, but may not be limited to:

• Design and implementation of boat and land-based transect survey program for dugong populations
• Seagrass surveys and mapping (using snorkeling) 
• Collection and analysis of data
• Development of plans for a network of community-managed dugong protected areas for Busuanga
• Writing of reports and liaison with relevant authorities and local communities to disseminate findings and recommendation
