This full-time, grant-funded, OPS position supports the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP) staff with the implementation of the Southeast Florida Coral Reef Initiative (SEFCRI) Local Action Strategies (LAS) and other projects, as developed by the SEFCRI Team of stakeholders and other interested parties. Specific duties are as follows:

Assist the Fishing, Diving, and Other Uses (FDOU) Coordinator with the following tasks:

  • Coordination of Reef Visual Census (RVC) partners (e.g., weekly email reminders).
  • Giving presentations at public stakeholder meetings regarding the SEFCRI ‘Our Florida Reefs’ Process (OFR).
  • Updating SEFCRI OFR presentation as needed, based on stakeholder feedback..
  • Updating SEFCRI OFR documents (e.g., meeting minutes, etc.), based on community working group meetings, stakeholder feedback and new scientific publications.
  • Coordinating the Our Florida Reefs Reef Champion network.
  • Maintain the Our Florida Reefs website and keeping the Florida Coral Program Facebook page active by creating new OFR content.
  • Attend SEFCRI OFR related planning and public meetings.
  • Coordination of the Marine Regulation Awareness Program.

Assist Southeast Regional Administrator, CRCP Manager, Office Manager, and Project Coordinators with the following tasks:

  • General/administrative office work (e.g., filing, mailing, entering data).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, skills and abilities, including utilization of equipment, required for the position:
Knowledge of: southeast Florida marine environment. Interest in coral reefs, natural resource and ecosystem management, recreational and commercial uses, marine science and public outreach required.

Ability to: communicate effectively with others verbally and in writing; research Best Management Practices and other pollution control strategies; communicate with public and officials in a courteous and engaging manner; enter and maintain datasets; adhere to stringent quality control/quality assurance protocols; travel within 4 county area (Martin, Palm Beach, Broward, and Miami-Dade counties); maintain and organize project files.

Skill in: the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Access, HTML/Website design, Wordpress, Adobe Acrobat, and EndNote.

Licensure/registration/certification requirements: valid Florida driver’s license.

Other job-related requirements for this position:
Education: High School diploma and minimum 2 years college required.  Bachelor’s degree from a four year college or university with course work in environmental management or policy, coral reef biology or ecology, water resources, or public policy preferred.

Funding: Position is grant funded for one year. Information regarding additional funding opportunities for subsequent years will be made available at a future time.

Working hours: (A) Daily from 9am to 6pm (B) Total hours in workweek 40 (C) Must be able to work flexible schedule including evenings and weekends, as needed. Position may be extended annually, contingent on available funding.

Salary: $17/hour

Database Applications Specialist- NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program in Silver Spring, MD

I.M. Systems Group, Inc. (IMSG) ( is looking to hire a Database Applications Specialist to support the NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program located in Silver Spring, MD.  A qualified candidate will develop new web applications and architecture elements for a SharePoint-based database system, support and improve existing systems, and work in close collaboration with the project manager, program staff, and other users to collect and maintain system-wide program data.  This is a full-time one-year term position; subsequent years may be part-time.

The Coral Reef Conservation Program is a cross-cutting program that brings together expertise from a wide array of NOAA programs and offices. In strong partnership with coral reef managers, the Coral Program works to reduce harm to, and restore the health of, coral reefs, by addressing priority national threats (climate change, fishing, and land-based sources of pollution) and local management priorities through conservation activities. The Coral Program funds and equips reef conservation activities by NOAA and its partners in the seven U.S. states and jurisdictions containing coral reefs (American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Florida, Guam, Hawai`i, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands), uninhabited U.S.-flag areas, and internationally. 


  • Develop SharePoint 2010 applications, including custom web part pages for user input, work flows, and reports.
  • Support the configuration and operations of the existing SharePoint-based database system.
  • Update, enhance, and document the system, including revisions to the data model and underlying SharePoint architecture.
  • Design and develop new subsystem applications to support ancillary datasets and program processes, including new data models, SharePoint applications, and custom web part pages.
  • Develop dynamic querying capabilities, and provide programmatic queries to program staff as needed.
  • Provide technical assistance, training, and support to users and program staff, and address bugs and user feedback.
  • Coordinate with program staff and users to identify needs and gaps.
  • Provide technical support for program websites, including graphic design and layout.

Required Qualifications:

  • Applicant’s work experience and training must demonstrate their ability to develop custom SharePoint 2010 applications.
  • Experience in designing, implementing, and maintaining databases.
  • Knowledge of SharePoint 2010, SharePoint Designer 2010 and Microsoft Access.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and GIS.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in providing data management support for large, complex entities.
  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop or similar graphic editing software.
  • Familiarity with website usability, cascading style sheets development, PHP, and HTML layout and design skills.
  • Familiarity with data product integration into websites and other online tools.

    Waterbird Biologist Position at USGS

    Position: Waterbird Biologist
    Subject Areas: Climate Change, Avian Influenza / Diseases, Spatial Modeling
    Target Start Date: As soon as filled; no later than Nov 1, 2013

    The U.S. Geological Survey, Patuxent Wildlife Research Center (PWRC) in collaboration with USGS Western Ecological Research Center (WERC) is seeking a full-time research biologist to work in a team setting to study waterbirds and wetlands for multiple research projects.  The main focus of work will include analysis and writing scientific papers for ongoing waterbird ecology and disease studies as well as handling logistics  and leading fieldwork for ongoing studies.  The position is located at PWRC in Beltsville, MD and is funded for 17 months with possibility of extension based on performance and grants.

    A major component of the work will include writing up avian influenza disease studies and assisting with applying disease models for web applications.  Strong writing skills are required with a proven ability to complete peer-reviewed scientific publications quickly.  The position may include fieldwork for studies of wild birds (such as capture, marking, and sampling) and ecology studies (bird surveys, land-use change studies, and population monitoring at restored wetlands).  Fieldwork may require long hours under difficult environmental conditions.  Duties may also include administrative tasks such as assisting with setting up contracts, ordering supplies, communicating with collaborators, and other logistical tasks.


    Proficiency to independently write scientific publications for submittal to peer-reviewed journals.  The role will include coauthoring or leading several manuscripts from existing USGS datasets or new efforts as assigned.  A PhD degree in ecology or related field or a MS degree with 4-6 years of experience is preferred, but the primary required experience will be a proven track record in scientific publication.

    Professional competence in planning, designing, executing, and coordinating research.

    Effective and constructive communication with appropriate Government representatives, both within the USGS and with international research partners. 

    Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, applying good judgment used to determine the order of completion of work, and effective communication employed to manage and meet the expectations of PWRC and partners. 

    Initiative and independence is exhibited both in the field and in the office.

    Knowledge of procedures, concepts, terminologies and practices of investigations related to  waterbird and wetland ecology.

    Knowledge of experimental design and statistical analysis systems.

    Computing skills including statistical software such as SAS, R; spatial software such as ArcGIS, Spatial Analyst, Erdas Imagine, Google Earth

    Skill in identifying and surveying waterbird species.

    Can meet physical demands of field work often under difficult conditions (cold, hot, wet, buggy, etc.)

    Experience in capture, handling, marking, and tracking methods for waterfowl may be helpful.

    Marine Mammal Biologist Vacancy in Philippines

    C3 is a young dynamic organization demonstrating how credible and rigorous scientific research can be combined with traditional ecological knowledge to inform effective conservation management actions from grassroots to regional and international levels. C3 currently has a vacancy for a Marine Mammal Biologist for its expanding Philippines program which focuses on long-term coastal resource management initiatives.  Our work employs local environmental knowledge in combination with conventional scientific research and has a strong emphasis on community involvement and capacity-building.  Working closely with the national government, local and international research institutions and community groups, our programs develop and implement sustainable actions for marine biodiversity conservation and economic development in marginalized regions. 

    Position Responsibilities
    The C3 Marine Mammal Biologist will be responsible for the project management of our dugong population survey project in Busuanga, Palawan.  Specific tasks include, but may not be limited to:

    • Design and implementation of boat and land-based transect survey program for dugong populations
    • Seagrass surveys and mapping (using snorkeling) 
    • Collection and analysis of data
    • Development of plans for a network of community-managed dugong protected areas for Busuanga
    • Writing of reports and liaison with relevant authorities and local communities to disseminate findings and recommendation

    • Field experience in marine mammal boat-based survey
    • Comfortable spending long periods of time on and in the water
