Job Summary: The Beyond the Classroom (BTC) Living and Learning Program, which focuses on civic engagement and social change in a global context,  is seeking a Graduate Assistant to contribute to helping prepare undergraduate students for professional leadership in the nonprofit and civil society sector.

DUTIES: 
• Compiling, writing, and disseminating the BTC Program Updates listserv to students, and assisting with social media outreach strategies and efforts.
• Coordinating all aspects of the recruitment process including: outreach to student groups and in courses; making presentations about the program; attending targeted events; answering student inquiries; collecting and organizing applications; and following up with admitted students about program requirements.
• Supporting curricular and extracurricular activities of the program, including planning and coordinating events such as seminars, film series, receptions, community service opportunities, civic learning trips, career forums, and course- related activities.
• Advising Beyond the Classroom’s students about community service, internship and experiential learning opportunities.
• Developing and implementing marketing campaigns, including the writing, design, duplication and, distribution of program newsletters, press releases, etc. 
• Actively participating in the BTC community.
• Assisting with other duties to be delegated by the Director, based on the candidate’s skills, interests, and expertise.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must be currently enrolled in a full-time graduate degree program at the University of Maryland, College Park. Candidates in any major and college are eligible to apply, but with a preference for those candidates who are committed to multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural, and global perspectives. Demonstrated ability and interest in working with undergraduate students in an interdisciplinary and integrative living and learning program focused on civic engagement and social change in a global context. Prior teaching, communications, and advising experience is very helpful. Please note that this position requires working some evening and weekend hours.

PREFERENCES: Preference will be given to candidates with previous community service experience and/or experience in the nonprofit and civil society sector.

STIPEND: This assistantship requires 20 hours of work per week. Beginning stipend for this Graduate Assistant (9.5-month) position is $ 16,577.16. The proposed starting date for this position is August 26, 2013.

ADDITIONAL BENEFITS INFORMATION: As a fringe benefit, the Graduate Assistantship (GA) provides up to ten credit hours of tuition remission for each of the Fall and Spring semesters and up to four credits for the Winter session. In addition, the administrative graduate assistant will be eligible for employee health insurance.

Global Communities is a two-year living-learning program in the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSOS) for 130-150 first and second year undergraduate students. Students participate in an innovative curriculum and take part in various extracurricular activities, including monthly excursions that take advantage of our location next to the nation’s capital.

In addition, students are required to engage in a global experience, such as studying or providing service abroad, or working on international issues at an internship or volunteer opportunity in the US. All of this is designed with two goals in mind: to expand understanding of the problems and opportunities the interconnected world brings, and to provide experience working with people from different backgrounds and cultures.

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Graduate Assistant primarily provides programmatic, teaching, and student advising support for Global Communities. Specific responsibilities include:

Teaching and Advising

  • Teaching Assistant for BSGC100 – Student In the University: Global Communities (1 credit course)
  • Advise first year Global Communities students.
  • Grade course assignments and enter them into the course management website (ELMS).

Marketing and Recruitment

  • Assist with fall recruitment and admissions events.
  • Assist/develop marketing materials for co-curricular and community development events.
  •  Respond to student inquiries.

Communications and Web

  • Create content for marketing materials social media platforms and website.
  • Assist with social media outreach strategies and efforts.

Programming and General Office Assistance

  • Assist with co-curricular programs and alumni outreach.
  • Store and update student records, lesson plans, assignments, attendance.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings to consult on teaching and student issues.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Applicant must be a University of Maryland student enrolled in a graduate program; students in Higher Education Administration or Social Science disciplines preferred.
  • Demonstrated personal and professional commitment to international education, diversity, and appreciation for cultural differences.
  • Previous teaching experience strongly preferred.
  • Flexible schedule and willingness to work occasional nights and weekends.
  • Experience developing and executing academic and/or social programs preferred. 
  • Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in public speaking and in writing.
  • Effective written and oral communication skills, attention to detail and highly organized.
  • Team player who works well in a collaborative, dynamic, interdisciplinary environment.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE:

  • Studied or worked internationally.
  • Experience using and creating content for various social media platforms.
  • Previous work experience in a university setting.

STIPEND: This is a part-time position for $19.26/hour, 10 hours per week, beginning August 26 – December 13, 2013, with possible contract renewal January 13 – May 16, 2014. There are no tuition or health benefits with this position.
